Every property in the Sacramento Valley has three defensible space zones. Understanding what’s required in each zone is the first step to compliance. TCI arborists assess all three zones on every visit.
Zone 0
0 – 5ft from structure
EMBER-RESISTANT ZONE

The Rules Have Changed
Sacramento City Ordinance 2025-0031 and updated County Metro Fire regulations introduced stricter enforcement across the Valley. Many homeowners are surprised to discover that their previously compliant properties no longer meet the new standards.

Key 2025–2026 Code Requirements
- Zone 0 Enforcement (0–5 ft): No combustible mulch, wood chips, or organic groundcover adjacent to foundations in High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones.
- 10-Foot Structural Clearance: Mandatory minimum 10-foot lateral gap between tree canopies and chimneys, rooflines, and other structures.
- Ladder Fuel Elimination: Lower limbs removed to 6–10 feet from the ground in designated fire risk areas.
- Fuel Load Abatement: Aggressive vegetation management required on vacant lots, riparian corridors, and natural parkways. Daily fines for uncorrected violations.
- Cost Recovery Fees: Sacramento County fire departments can now bill property owners when negligence triggers an emergency response.

Spacing Rules Change With Slope
This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of defensible space compliance. Canopy spacing requirements vary significantly based on terrain — many Sacramento foothills homeowners don’t realize their requirements are two to three times stricter than flat-lot properties.
